This is really nice for low-poly. Do you get your maps from photos or make them yourself?

Nah this a slap-on job of a photo. It's only just one texture for the entire mesh as well, and thanks =D. I do try and keep my polycounts as low as i can without sacrificing too much in quality. I mean why bother making something extremely detailed when your audience isn't going to see any of minute details anyway. Not to mention that at 800x600 resolution, you're really not going to be able to look all that closely anyway.

I know that in terms of rendering a 3d model, i could go much futher and do some proper UVW mapping and texturing for these weapons i've been making as of late, but i'm just trying to get the hang of the modelling side of things right now... as far as i'm concerned, making pretty shaders and textures can come later.

Unfortunately my graphics tablet cries for attention and well... sadly it hasnt had any for about a month now. "Don't worry wacom.. i'll use you not too long from now"

Mainly coz of the texture i reckon. Also i took an extra 3 seconds to relise that the gun was inverted.. ie: the writing was the wrong way around and so i did a quick flip which seems to add more realism to it (since this time around you can actually READ the writing on the model in the first place)

lol actually it IS another model. The gun might be the same but i figure that it would probably be smarter if i do it from scratch instead and well.. i did. But yes, i like to think of these works as a good example of how photography can be VERY useful in making otherwise 3D (not real) objects seem more life-like.

Don't get me wrong, i'm a big fan of using shaders and materials but if i ever get the chance to use a photo, i'm probably going to simply because of the added benefits.

True but that's one of the good things about photoshop in the way you can edit the photos, dually in 3D if your smart about using photos then you can match up the direction of the lights in your scene to the general direction of the light in the photos, then it all seems to blend in quite nicely.
